Samiah Fulcher
Hello Neighbor: Purple Windows

Materials: Salvaged window, cyanotype fabric, acrylic paint, acrylic yarn, oil varnish. Description: Windows are often viewed figuratively as portals — the boundary between two worlds. This piece is a reflection on what time, distance, and a kind of weathering do to a perceived portal. Call to mind the house at the end of the street, or the facade of a too long untended yard. How do we approach crossing the threshold of a space that no longer holds a familiar form, color, texture? What stories remain of what it once was? What do we recognize of what its silhouette has become?

Hello Neighbor: Purple Window

Windows display an unfiltered version of the occupants inside, framing glimpses of private lives and routines. The painted purple exterior separates the raw, wooden interior, emphasizing the divide between private interior and public exterior. The VHS cassette and material evoke the ritual of surveillance. The act of looking in, as we look into neighbors’ windows to see what they are watching on TV. Like many artists, I am a collector of sorts. in my piece titled, "an act of habitual romance", I emphasize this phenomenon. Attachment to the inanimate is something I find very human. Items are stories having physical- and emotional weight. In this piece I have incorporated items that have meaning to me in different stages of my life. They are an ode to an artist in her 20's somewhere in a city. A window into an accumulation of everything she has ever loved. Holding physical things sometimes feels like a burden- so is this an act of habit or a symptom of being a romantic.

Windows can be a glimpse at the surreal or a view into a world unmarred by one’s true reality. It can be easy to imagine endless possibilities through one’s window, to imagine a slough of dreamscapes. I wanted to create a scene to evoke familiarity, longing, and the excitement of peering through a secret window at something magical and overgrown. Is it dense foliage or a patchwork of memories and familiar imagery from one’s childhood? Hello Neighbor: Purple Window - (Return to Ground)

iMaterials: Salvaged window, Xerox Pints, Photography, and Exterior Paint. Statement: This work is about seeking slowness, connection, and calm in a fast-paced life. This started with pictures of clouds and macro shots from the window seat of an airplane. When I returned home from vacation, I started obsessively taking pictures of clouds when I returned to the ground. I began noticing the clouds' differences in shapes, colors, textures and how they change depending on the time of day and impending storms. I invite viewers to pause, look closer, and reconnect with the quiet beauty of the natural world after interacting with the work. We don’t have to travel far to feel grounded—we just have to slow down and pay attention.
