The Other Side
Othering is a way to exclude, deny, label and alienate. In The Other Side, artists Christine Rabenold and Kevin Valentine collaborate on an installation which illustrates the exclusion of others in a way that is lawn-appropriate. Rabenold’s inoffensive ceramic bunnies are held back on a lawn by Valentine’s fence constructed from found sticks. In times of conflict and turmoil, we often need metaphors to illustrate the absurd nature of some arguments including total exclusion of those who are in need. The Other Side collaboration demonstrates the outcome of a small bit of suburban land divided into habitable and exclusionary halves.

American Arbor
“American Arbor” is part of a series of contemporary landscape paintings rooted in the American Midwest, which I define broadly as the central United States. An arbor traditionally symbolizes rest, refuge, and quiet enjoyment—both internal and external. This work reflects my deep connection to that landscape and explores the quiet beauty and complexity of the region. Woven throughout is a sense of interconnectedness between humans and the natural world, a recurring theme in my practice.

Crafting a Plastic Garden
Artificial flowers can be made with many materials; paper, fabric, wood, etc. In the spirit of DIY I chose to repurpose single-use plastic to craft my flowers. Over the past several years, I’ve made a conscious effort to reduce my plastic waste—especially from plastic food packaging. Even so, I have bins stuffed with plastic, most of which is not recyclable. I am excited to give this plastic a second life in the form of flowers. My hope is by showing how plastic can add beauty to our neighborhoods, others in the community will be inspired to create art projects too.
