Becky Alley’s Hope Chest series engages the tradition of gifting items necessary for a girl’s future. As a mother, Alley contemplates preparing her children for an uncertain future. Counter this gendered convention, Alley combines typical contents (quilts, linens, books) with objects of crisis (tarps, paracord, sandbags). Tackling fears about the world her children will inherit, the artist speculates on impending disaster and loss, while stressing adaptability and resilience. Hope Chest: Open Terrain opens up public dialogues about our future given climate disasters and growing inequality.
