Metal sculpture made from an antique birdcage stand, found wire baskets wrapped with colorful wire and an exuberant tangle of colored curly wire entangled in the object.
Airwaves
Repurposing vintage birdcage stands as armatures reminded us of radio microphone stands and megaphones from the early 20th century. The paired sculptures represent two complementary and interdependent actions of communication: speaking and listening. Radio air waves of the 30’s and 40’s brought entertainment and news to anxious listeners. Today we are overwhelmed with relentless waves of communication in all forms. While visually presenting the cacophony of our networked airwaves, our installation is silent except for the sounds of the wind and waves, distant blast furnaces, and people enjoying nature connecting us to this rare setting.
