The heart of my project for the 2021 Terrain Biennial is based in surrealism’s loving fear
of the unconscious mind and its mysteries. The imagery comes from a series of graphite
drawings I created after my mother’s unexpected death. In the days following, I had a
number of dreams where pieces of her body and my own were warped, merged, and
changed beyond recognition. Each drawing has been enlarged and translated into a
stencil using adhesive vinyl. The resulting images are unsettling representations of the
body, marked with mystery, confusion, and humor. This installation will change over the
course of the Biennial as new silhouettes are added, subtracted, and moved.

Conversations with my neighbors requires new norms of behavior. My neighborhood is located close to the Louisville International Airport, and due to the recent remapping of the UPS airways, the normal cadence of conversation is too often interrupted by the sound of planes overhead. Both parties must pause their speech and communicate only through eye contact.
“Can You Hear Me?” responds to this temporal interruption in normal conversational tempo. A microphone and lighting is installed in front of a house directly under the flight path. As planes pass over, a sound meter triggers the microphone and lights to turn on.
