‘Look up’ is an intentionally ephemeral banner (wheat paste, paper and lining textile) which exhorts the viewer to change their point of view. First affixed to the wrought iron railing of the artist’s terraced house on a central London street, then transported to Dhaka Bangladesh where the artist also lives, it is a physical call to movement, a call to transition from the doldrums to a more positive way of negotiating the world, a description of seeking information to get an answer. ‘Look up’ is an attempt to turn the vapid language of mass media in on itself. Just as the viewer can ‘read’ the text in different ways, the work operates on different levels. However, in reality, it is cynical marketing – a motivational device demanding we feel a certain way, negating our real state of being.
