Gina Lee Robbins and IPS Summer School Students
Hope Balloons

As a teaching artist, I have the privilege of visiting public school environments and learning from communities of students. I spent the summer of 2023 working with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) students who were required to attend summer school in order to continue in subsequent K-8 grade levels. These students were struggling... academically, emotionally and linguistically. We spent the summer exploring different methods of weaving and ultimately installed a collaborative fiber artwork at Rousseau McClellan School (#91), where we were working. At the end of six weeks I collected the remnants of student work and created these five suspended sculptures.

Layers of Identity

Layers of Identity is a collaborative public art project that unites queer individuals to explore the diverse facets of identity through creative installations. This project invites participants to collaborate on art pieces that reflect their unique experiences. These installations, displayed in public spaces, serve as a visual representation of the complex layers within the queer community. By fostering dialogue and understanding, Layers of Identity not only celebrates the richness of queer identity but also promotes inclusivity and belonging among people of all backgrounds. Through art, this project creates a platform for individual and shared expression.

Those Around Us

Those Around Us is a metal sculpture of two one-line drawing inspired faces. These faces represent people who may not know each other, but have connections that they do not know about yet. The arch between them shows the underground connection. I think about all of the people I have met since moving to Indianapolis and being a part of the art community. Over time I have realized that somehow, someway anyone new I meet is connected to friends I already have.
